I've titled this "Spooky Books For Spooky Season" but let's be real, it's always spooky season in this house. I'm including both books I have and haven't read on this list because I trust my friends' opinions and also some of them just give that vibe that they'll be great and if there's every a time to trust the paranormal effect of books talking to you it's now! The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks
The first book I just HAVE to talk about is one I was vehemently warned against. "Emma, do not read this book." "This is so disturbing I hate it just don't torture yourself" etc etc. So, naturally, I saw it for £1 in a second hand store and bought it. BEST. THING. I'VE. DONE. I... loved? this book. I don't really want to say that, because it's true - it's not exactly a pleasant book. It involves a guy who's been kidnapped and placed into a bunker. I'm truly saying no more about it because I think you just have to go into it with as little knowledge as possible but don't expect sunshine and rainbows in this book. It's dark, but I want to say mildly so - unless I'm just that disturbed this seemed okay to me - regardless, it's been a while since I read this and I can't think of any trigger warnings off the top of my head so do exercise some caution, just incase. Notes From My Captivity by Kathy Parks I really did not expect this book to end up on a list like this - sure it's about a kidnapping in Siberia but this book went places I did not expect and scared me more than some "horror" books have. WOW Birdy by Jess Vallance This YA was creepier than I thought it would be, although milder than the previous books. It's one of those books where I really want to tell you what made me like it so much but that would mean spoiling the book big time so just trust me on it when I say this was a really enjoyable read! Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero I haven't read this book yet but it gets such high praise and sounds super spooky and also anything that makes me think of Scooby Doo has to be good, right? The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R Carey This book came out and was so hyped. I saw the genre "horror" and was like NOPE. BUT a year or so ago I finally read the synopsis and was sold... but I've still been chicken to read it. I'm not even scared easily - especially not with books (I say, having never given horror a try) so I don't know why I haven't just bit the bullet. Here's hoping this year is the year! The Merciless i & ii by Danielle Vega I'm specifically putting down books one and two because I have a bind up edition (which bugs me for my goodreads goal since it's technically two books but then technically I'm only reading one and I honestly overthink how I want to count my books so I'm going to stop here before I just write out an entire blog post on my dilemma!!) I'm not going to lie, I really don't know anything about this book(s). I remember when it first got hyped on book tube and everyone was talking about it but then I feel like a LOT of people did not like it and I want to say it's because it was "disturbing" which, if my record with The Bunker Diary is anything to go by, this should be right up my street! I'm honestly a little scared to read it incase it's not what I think I heard people say and I get disappointed! And there's just a handful of the spooky books I have/want to read! Let me know any of your spooky recommendations!!
